THE PHILADELPHIA ICONOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
THE PROSOPON SCHOOL OF ICONOLOGY

CLASS SCHEDULE for ACADEMIC YEAR 2012

Prosopon School of Iconology

The emphasis is placed on personal spiritual discipline and growth through a study of Christian Church teachings and principles as practiced in the making of icons. The Prosopon School is founded by and principles and methods are under the direction of master iconographer Vladislav Andrejev.

PROSOPAN SCHOOL OF ICONOLOGY

The Prosopon School of Iconology will hold an icon painting workshop at St. Thomas Church Whitemarsh, PA during Lent 2012.  As in 16th Century Byzantine Russia, students will create icons using ancient techniques and natural materials rich with symbolic meaning: carved wood boards prepared with gesso made of marble dust and chalk, finely ground clay, pure gold leaf and ground mineral pigments in egg yolk emulsion.  As in this ancient and traditional technique, practice and meaning are linked; the underlying theology of the icon will be emphasized.

Previous artistic experience is not necessary since icon writing is as much a contemplative form of prayer as an artistic discipline.  The workshop consists of six Sunday afternoon sessions (12:30pm– 6:45pm, which includes a 15 minute tea break) during which time first-time students will each complete an icon of the face of Mother of God.  New students will be provided with step-by-step instructions and all necessary materials.  Students who have attended previous workshops are welcome to attend to continue their study of the icon.

The Prosopon School of Iconology was founded by Vladiskav Andrejev, who was born in St.Petersburg Russia where he attended Youth Art School, Tavrichevsky Art College, the Fine Arts Academy and Polygraphic Institute.  Unable to freely practice iconography in Russia at that time, Mr. Andrejev emigrated to the United States in 1980 and is widely regarded as the foremost iconographer in America.  He now has students and teachers in his school worldwide with the focus of activity in Russia and the United States.
