Celtic Illuminated Manuscript Workshop

Deer Skin Vellum and Mineral Pigments in Egg Tempera

Saturday and Sunday June 23, 24, 1-5pm

Students will learn the insular alphabet of the Golden Age of Irish manuscripts (6-8th C.) and make an illuminated page based on images from the Book of Kells.  Theme will be living in peace with animal images and students will choose a text on the theme.   Students will immerse themselves in the mystical images, decorative devices, materials and history of the early church as expressed in Ireland

Traditional materials will be used, deer skin vellum is recommended but other papers and gouache paints are available for vegans.  Decorations will be made using mineral pigments in the manner of the scriptorium of the middle ages in a weekend workshop, Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoons

No artistic experience is necessary, all materials will be provided.

Fee: $190.00 tuition plus materials $35.00 equaling total for workshop $225.00 per student.  If students wish to use prepared true deerskin vellum there is a surcharge of $40.  Other options are a vegetable vellum (non animal approximation or Bockingford Oatmeal color Rag paper.  Please indicate preference for supplies ordering.
